Work Hours to Buy Calculator

Find out how many hours, days, and weeks of work a purchase costs you at your pay.

Enter the price, your pay and its period, and your hours and days per week, then calculate.

A curiosity tool, not financial advice: it uses the pay exactly as entered and a fixed 52-week year.

Methodology

Formula or transformation

Normalizes the pay to a year (hourly × hours per week × 52, weekly × 52, monthly × 12, yearly as entered) and the hours to a year (hours per week × 52); hours of work are the price times annual hours over annual pay, and work days and weeks follow the days and hours per week. Each result is exact products followed by one truncating division.

  1. Price of the item
  2. Pay as entered
  3. Hours worked per week

Rounding policy

Time and money keep canonical precision and are rounded to two decimal places for display.

Your pay is converted to a yearly amount (52 paid weeks, 12 months) and divided by your yearly hours to get pay per hour; the price divided by pay per hour gives the hours of work, and your days and hours per week turn them into work days and weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Should I enter my pay before or after tax?

Either; the result is in the same terms. Net pay shows the hours you actually work for the money you keep.

How are work days calculated?

The hours of work are divided by your hours per work day, which is the hours per week divided by the days per week you enter.
